Six community leaders met with Lakeview Ranch Interns, Nurses and Laurence Colaizy, Director of the MN Dept of Health, Office of Rural Health & Primary Care Internship Program.
The luncheon was held at Dassel Lakeview Ranch last Thursday (August 11, 2011), to foster community involvement and provide education about the MN Dept of Health, Office of Health & Primary Care’s partnership with MN healthcare providers to employ, train and provide summer interns from both MN high schools and colleges with hands on experience in various healthcare environments, in the hopes of attracting students to careers in healthcare.
In addition, Community Leaders present were Dean Urdahl-Rep MN House, Mike Scanlon – Mayor of Dassel, Josh Johnson – Mayor of Darwin, and Wally Strand & Tim Benoit – Meeker County Commissioners. LR summer interns Marin Haugo, Elizabeth Koch and Brenda Latzke, along with Nurses Lisa Nordberg, Margaret Slagle, LR founder Judy Berry and Photographer Julius Keya shared an informative and enjoyable lunch discussing the importance of the internship program and possible other collaborations.
Lakeview Ranch has participated in the program every summer for the last 8 years but Judy sadly learned from Laurence Colaizy that this program is to be discontinued due to the severe cuts to healthcare programs in the 2012 MN budget. Judy spoke of the amazing response they have had from both high school and college students wanting to be in the program. Many of the previous interns have told us their experience at Lakeview was one of the deciding factors in their career choice and was one of the best experiences in training for their healthcare careers.
