James Wisnewski was suspended for eight games and Brad Staubitz for three as the NHL announced the punishments connected to last Friday night’s incident between Columbus and Minnesota in a preseason game.
Both players were also suspended for the rest of the preseason.
Wisnewski, the Blue Jackets defenseman, was disciplined for an illegal hit to the head of Wild forward Cal Clutterbuck at the end of the third period. Staubitz, the Wild’s forward, had been called out for an illegal check from behind of Columbus center Cody Bass.
Bass sustained injuries to his face on the play, which was a key factor for NHL senior vice president of safety Brendan Shanahan.
“This factor weighed most heavily in my decision,” Shanahan said in a video announcing his decision.
The players were also fined. Wisnewski will return Oct. 25 against Detroit. Staubitz is eligible to return Oct. 13 vs. Edmonton.
