Trevor Plouffe plated Denard Span with an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Minnesota Twins prevented their 100th loss of the season with a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.
Carl Pavano (9-13) scattered five hits in a complete-game gem for Minnesota (63-99), which successfully avoided the second 100-loss campaign in franchise history. The 1982 rendition of the Twins went 60-102.
Span doubled to right and advanced to third on rookie Ben Revere’s groundout. Plouffe, who failed to reach base in his previous four at-bats, singled to shallow left to end the game.
Blake Wood (5-3), who relieved starter Bruce Chen, allowed two hits to take the loss for Kansas City (71-91), which finished the season on an 11-5 run.
Chen allowed eight hits in as many innings.
