What the Future Holds 29 Dec 11

The Cokato Historical Society invites the public to its 12th Annual New Year’s Open House on Sunday, January 8th, 1:00 – 4:0 p.m., in the Centennial Room of the library/museum in downtown Cokato.

At the open house, officials say the Finnish New Year’s custom of “melting tin” will be demonstrated. A popular custom, participants melt small pieces of tin over a stove in a cast iron lathe, then cast the melted tin into a pail of cold water, causing it to form unique shapes. Tradition holds

that these shapes foretell what the upcoming year will bring.

Area residents familiar with this custom are especially encouraged to attend.

Light refreshments will be served.
