This December turned out to be one of the busiest months of the year for the Hutchinson Fire Department in a record-setting year.
The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to a new record high of 475 calls in 2011, 58 of which occured in December alone. December also brought the first fatal fire since 2002 to the Hutchinson area.
Hutchinson Fire Chief Brad Emans reiterated that working smoke detectors can usually prevent fire fatalities, giving you time to get out. Emans also says that it’s very likely the December fire fatality could have been avoided if the one smoke detector that was in the home had been working.
