The crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. when a car crossed the median and collided with oncoming traffic on Interstate Highway 94
The State Patrol says roads were slippery and slushy at the time.
The State Patrol this morning (Tuesday) identified four people who were killed in the crash. They are: 18-year-old Lauren Peterson of Prior Lake. She was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. Also killed were 19-year-old Jordan Playle of Elk River, 18-year-old Megan Sample of Rogers, and 18-year-old Danielle Renninger of Excelsior. The Patrol says all were riding in the Malibu.
According to the St. Cloud Times, family members say the four women who died were college roommates heading back to North Dakota State University.
The patrol has not released the names of the drivers of the two other vehicles involved.
The car Peterson was driving was traveling west when she lost control and went through the median into eastbound traffic. A 2008 Ford Expedition hit the Malibu broadside. A 2007 Toyota Corolla then rear-ended the sport utility vehicle.
