Melrose native makes Olympics, 4 others go for spots this week 26 Jun 12

Former Melrose standout Amanda Smock has made the US Olympic Team. Smock finished first in the Triple Jump Monday in Oregon and clinched a spot on the team. Smock had a jump of 45 feet 9 inches, 4 ½ inches better than her closest competitor.

In other Olympic Qualifying news from Minnesotans…former Minneapolis runner Jamie Cheever advanced to Friday’s finals in the Steeplechase event. She finished 6th in her heat. In the mens 5,000 meter run Hasaan Mead of Minneapolis and Elliot Heath of Winona both advanced to the finals in their event. And in Swimming Eden Prairie’s Rachel Bootsma starts her quest for the US team with qualifying heats in the Breaststroke and Backstroke today and tomorrow.
