Eden Prairie’s Rachel Bootsma has made the US Olympic Swim Team. Bootsma finished 2nd in the 100 meter backstroke yesterday, edging out the stars of the last Olympic games Natalie Coughlin for the spot. Bootsma finished in 59.49 seconds, .17 seconds ahead of Coughlin. Bootsma and favorite Missy Franklin both advance to the London Games.
Also in the Olympic Trials, former Gopher David Plummer finished 3rd in the mens 100 meter backstroke, .12 seconds out of a spot in the Olympics. And today Perham native Gabriele Anderson runs for a spot in the Olympics by taking part in the 1,500 meter run on the Track and Field side of the Games. The former Gopher had battled cancer in recent years but made it back to try for the Olympics this year.
