ORIOLES NOTES:

  • ·   The Orioles are now 17-6 in one-run games this season…nine of their last 13 games have been decided by three runs-or-fewer…the O’s have been held to two or fewer runs in 15 of their last 28 games.
  • ·   Tommy Hunter improved to 3-1, 2.82 (28.2 ip, 9 er) in five career game, four starts vs. the Twins …in 2012, Hunter is 2-0, 0.63 (14.1 ip, 1 er) in two starts vs. the Min…two of his four wins in 2012 have come vs. the Twins…the 7.1 innings pitched by Hunter was his most since he threw 7.2 innings on August 27, 2010 vs. Oakland.
  • ·   The Orioles have scored two or fewer runs while Hunter was in the game in seven of his last 12 starts, scoring a total of 34 runs in that time.
  • ·   Adam Jones hit his 22nd home run of the season in the first inning off Liriano…this was the fourth time this season he has homered in back-to-back games and first since he hit a homer in three straight games on May 15-17…the Orioles are now 17-4 when Jones homers…he has hit safely in 46 of his last 60 games…his 22 home runs are just three short of his career-high 25 last season.
  • ·   Jones hit his third triple of the season in the eighth inning…it was the Orioles first triple since June 5 at Boston…coming into today’s game they ranked 29th in triples this season with eight as a team.
  • ·   Jim Johnson is now 27 for 29 in save opportunities this season.

TWINS NOTES: ­

  • ·   The Twins fell to 16-16 in one-run games this season and 3-42 when they score three or fewer runs in the game…this was the 17th time that the Twins have scored one or fewer runs in a game (0-17 record).
  • ·   Francisco Liriano became the first Twins pitcher to strike out 10-or-more batters in back-to-back games since he did it on June 5 and 11, 2010…he now has 77 strikeouts in 10 starts since rejoining the rotation on May 30…coming into today, the 77 strikeouts would lead all of baseball in that time…this was the 11th time in his career that he has struck out 10-or-more batters in a game.
  • ·   Liriano fell to 6-2 in his career when he strikes out 10-or-more in a game…each of those two losses have come in his last two starts.
  • ·   Trevor Plouffe (2-for-3) extended his career-high hitting streak to 16 games with a single in the second inning…the 16-game hit streak is the longest by a Twin since Orlando Cabrera also hit safely in 16 straight from September 19-October 6, 2009…the last Twins player to have a streak longer than 16 straight was Torii Hunter, who had a 23-game hit streak from April 11-May 9, 2007.
  • ·   Josh Willingham hit his 23rd home run of the season in the fourth inning…his 23 homers are tied for the seventh-most in the Al this season (coming into today)…he has now hit safely in each of his last six games, batting .476 (10-for-21) with four home runs and six rbi in that span…he now has 500 rbi in his career.
  • ·   Casey Fien has now thrown 6.1 scoreless innings over four appearances this season…he has allowed just three hits with three strikeouts.
  • ·   Justin Morneau ground out with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth inning…he is now 1-for-12 (.083) with the bases loaded this season.
  • ·   The Twins’ bullpen tossed 3.0 shutout innings tonight, allowing just one hit…they have now thrown 7.2 consecutive scoreless innings.
  • ·   The eight hits for the Twins tonight was their fewest since they had four on July 4 at Detroit…they had a streak of nine consecutive games with nine-or-more hits.
