Hope, the Tortured Dog, Gets a Home 20 Jul 12

A bright side to the sad story of Hope, a dog who was cruelly tortured, is she has now been adopted by Charlie and Kit Moncrief, the family who first spotted her on their Texas ranch.

When the Moncriefs initially saw Hope, a 3 to 4-year old pug mix, she was wandering their property with electrical tape sealing her mouth shut, her tongue massively swollen and protruding, five cuts (taking over 1,000 stitches to close) on her body, and severely dehydrated. The Dallas Morning News described it as “one of the worst cases of animal cruelty ever reported in the county.”

As expected, Hope initially ran from Parker County animal control officers and it took them several hours to track her down, but after receiving treatment, Hope is expected to fully recover. Local veterinarian, Rhonda sears reported, “Hope is doing excellent. She just doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. The swelling is going down in her muzzle and there is no doubt in my mind that she’ll survive.”

All are glad to see Hope going to a good home, and those who know the Moncriefs, including Parker County Sherriff Larry Fowler, feel there is no better place for such a dog. Fowler told Yahoo News, “I have known the Moncrief family for many, many years. I can’t think of a better family for Hope to belong to. She will think she is in heaven at her new home with her new family.”

Hope’s terrible ordeal has sparked outrage among Parker County residents and the nation. Currently, authorities and donors have reserved $35,000 of reward money for information leading to the dog torturer’s arrest and conviction.

Fowler has said his office is working on several leads but is still looking for the suspect(s) responsible.
