ST. PAUL, MN (August 1, 2012) – The St. Paul Saints tied a franchise record by winning 19 games in the month of July and closed out the month by winning seven straight. One of the many reasons for the team’s success was the starting pitching of Robert Coe. His undefeated July earned him the American Association Rawlings Pitcher of the Month for July.
The 24-year-old Coe went 6-0 with a 2.64 ERA and one complete game in eight starts. In 58.0 innings of work Coe walked 20 while striking out 40 and opponents hit just .235 against him. He currently has a string of 17.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
Coe’s final start of the month came on Tuesday, July 31 when he hurled 8.0 shutout innings against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks allowing just two hits while walking seven and striking out six. In his eight starts in July he went at least 6.2 innings and allowed four runs or less in all eight starts.
During the season Coe has been one of the top pitchers in the league going 9-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 15 starts with two complete games and one shutout. In 98.1 innings he has walked 40 and struck out 56 while opponents are hitting .251 against him. He is currently tied for first in the league in games started, third in wins, tied for third in shutouts, fifth in innings pitched and eighth in ERA.
Prior to this season Coe pitched just 12.1 innings at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and that came last season during his senior year. He went 1-1 with a 0.73 ERA and two saves. He was signed by the Saints on June 21 of last season and went 3-1 with a 4.93 ERA in 18 games (one start). His finest appearance of the season came in Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs when he allowed one run in 6.0 innings against the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
This is the second award Coe has garnered this season also winning the Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 2-8. The Saints had another pitcher earn Pitcher of the Week when Luke Anderson received the award for the week of July 23-29. The last time a Saints pitcher earned the Pitcher of the Month award was Brian Whinnery in June, 2007.
