National Guard Sergeant Eric Phinney of Monticello is a Purple Heart Medal recipient five years after he was wounded in Iraq.
Phinney was wounded in an I-E-D attack and at the time, traumatic brain injuries did not qualify for the honor, but the policy was changed in 2011.
Senator Amy Klobuchar presented Phinney with the Purple Heart medal at the state capitol Thursday.
Senator Klobuchar says Phinney deserves to be honored and says Phinney was honored and humbled to receive the medal with his wife, daughter and fellow soldiers by his side.
Phinney is still in rehabilitation but has gotten much better since suffering the traumatic brain injury in 2007.
