Inspect Fuel Oil Tanks Before Winter 02 Oct 12

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is reminding Minnesotans who heat their homes with fuel oil to inspect tanks and piping now, before the winter heating season begins.

According to the M-P-C-A, more than 40 residential fuel oil spills and leaks occur each year, damaging homes and costing homeowners thousands of dollars in cleanup cost and lost fuel.

The agency says that a simple annual inspection would prevent many of these leaks from occurring.

Fuel oil tanks require regular maintenance to prevent leaks from corrosion, improper installation, faulty piping, failing valves, and from weather conditions, such as falling ice, snow packs, or flooding.
