Raining Beets 05 Oct 12

A semi trailer with a full load of sugar beets malfunctioned Thursday morning and beets spilled onto U.S. Highway 212 just west of Olivia.

Two vehicles were damaged by the beets but no one was injured. According to the State Patrol, the incident happened around 8 a.m. when a westbound beet trailer broke open at the side and sugar beets spilled onto the road as two eastbound vehicles were passing by.

According to the State Patrol, a latch came loose on the trailer causing the side door to open and dump some of the beets.

The beets struck two oncoming vehicles, a car driven by 32-year-old Larissa Maurice of Danube, and a car driven by 39-year-old Kristine Mattson of Texas.

They said it was like it was raining beets.

The “downpour” caused minor damage to the vehicles.

A MnDot plow was used to push the beets off the road.
