Montevideo Man Competent to Stand Trial 18 Oct 12

A Montevideo man has been found competent to stand trial in the murder of a co-worker last winter.

25-year-old Darek Nelson passed an evaluation after being accused of stabbing 18-year-old Vinessa Lozano to death after the two completed their shift at the Montevideo Pizza Ranch on January 13th.

Another worker reported the attack and reportedly tried to save Lozano, but says that Nelson threatened him with the same hunting knife. Police say Nelson was still stabbing Lozano when they arrived at the scene.

Nelson reportedly told police he was angry because he felt Lozano had rejected his romantic advances.

Nelson was indicted by a grand jury on a 1st-degree murder charge this past May, and now faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison.
