On Saturday, at about 8:30 in the evening, the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office received a report of and responded with Watkins Fire and Watkins Rescue to a train on fire near mile marker 128 on Minnesota Highway 55 near Watkins.
C.P. Rail reported that the primary train engine was on fire and was now stopped at that location. Authorities say Watkins Fire Department was able to put out the small fire with an extinguisher.
The fire caused damage to one of the lower drive motors on the engine. The cause and value of the damage is unknown at this time. The second engine was started and the train was moved further west onto a second track while Fire and Rescue members assisted with traffic control at the effected intersections.
No one was injured.
