A Darwin man was hurt in an auger accident at his farm Thursday, and a subsequent fire destroyed several thousand bushels of soybeans.
The Meeker County Sheriff’s Department says 60-year-old Alan West had been working on a grain bin with a cutting torch at his farm on County Road 9 in Ellsworth Township, when he became injured by an auger. KWLM reports another person took him to Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield. He was later airlifted to a Twin Cities Hospital.
Later in the afternoon, at about 2 p.m., 46-year-old Eric Sandstede of Dassel returned to West’s farm and found soybeans in the grain bin on fire. The Dassel Fire Department responded and cut another hole in the bin to put out the fire.
About 15,000 bushels of beans were destroyed.
