The New Ulm School Board has chosen G-F-W Superintendent Jeff Bertrang to be the district’s next superintendent.
The decision came after a series of interviews and “Community Forums” with Bertrang and the other superintendent finalist, Houston Superintendent Jean Broadwater.
New Ulm Superintendent Harold Remme is retiring after the current school year after 16 years with the district.
The school board unanimously voted to begin contract negotiations with Bertrang. He will be offered a 3-year contract, with a starting salary of $125,000, with annual raises of $1,250 the next 2 years, a 1% increase.
Officials say the New Ulm District has the lowest-paid superintendent in the South Central Conference, with Remme opting for pay freezes in recent years as a cost-cutting measure. Bertrang’s contract would reportedly offer fewer fringe benefits than Remme’s.
Bertrang still has 1 year on his contract with G-F-W, so that district’s school board must agree to release him.
