A Hector man has died after a weekend crash near Saturday evening.
Authorities say 22-year-old Cody Kirgiss North Memorial Medical Center in Robbindale.
The State Patrol says Olivia Police were checking on a driving complaint north of Hwy 212 on 11th St N. After locating the suspect vehicle, driven by Kirgiss, Olivia PD began pursuit on Hwy 212. A Renville County Sheriff Deputy had stopped his squad car with emergency lights activated in the eastbound lane of Hwy 212 at 21st St. Traffic to the rear of the deputy had stopped. Kirgiss was still traveling WB on Hwy 212, crossed over the centerline and struck the squad car head-on. The squad was unoccupied at the time but was pushed into a vehicle parked on the shoulder. The Kirgiss vehicle rolled onto its right side and caught fire.
The Olivia Officer and Renville County Deputies attempted to gain entry to the vehicle to render aid while bystanders attempted to put out the fire. After the Olivia Fire Department extricated Kirgiss, he was airlifted by North Air Care from the scene to North Memorial Medical Center, where he later died.
The Olivia Officer and a Renville County Deputy were treated at the Renville County Hospital and Clinics for smoke and fire extinguisher chemical inhalation and were released.
The driver of the vehicle behind the squad car, a 64-year-old Blomkest man, was not injured.
The crash happened just after 7pm Saturday.
