Hutchinson police are requesting charges against a Hutchinson man for firing a shotgun early Sunday morning to scare off would-be thieves.
Police say they were called to the report of a theft at about 2am in the 500 Block of 3rd Avenue Southwest in which the homeowner’s daughter heard something outside the home. When she looked out, she says she saw three juvenile males looking through two parked vehicles. She yelled at them and they took off running, one of them losing a shoe in the process.
The daughter told her father, who was sleeping at the time. He allegedly grabbed a shotgun and when outside and when the three apparently came back for the shoe, he fired a shot in the air. The three then took off running again. The homeowner says nothing was taken from the vehicles.
Police seized the spent cartridge and the shoe for evidence. The search continues for the suspects.
Police are requesting a misdemeanor charge of discharging a firearm within city limits through the city attorney’s office against the homeowner.
