The search for a missing kayaker on the Minnesota River near Courtland continues today (Monday) after a full day of searching on Sunday.
51-year-old Stephen Fritze of Watertown, South Dakota failed to make it to shore Saturday night after overturning his kayak west of Courtland.
Fritze and two friends, Cameron Buri and John Carter of Watertown had three kayaks on the river when they ran into some brush and at least two of them overturned.
Nicollet County Sheriff Dave Lange says that Buri and Carter were able to make it to shore. He says that they were wearing life jackets, while Fritze was not. Emergency responders from Nicollet, Brown and Blue Earth Counties, as well as the Courtland Fire Department searched the area on shore and by boat until sunset Saturday. The search team on Sunday included 8 boats and 35 people, and resumed this morning.
Recent rains have caused local rivers to rise several inches in the past few days and have created unsafe conditions.
