A former Bemidji police chief riding in the Bicycle Around Minnesota tour was injured when he was hit by a car Friday morning north of Paynesville.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened at 9:12 a.m. when a motorist allegedly failed to stop at the intersection of County Road 16 and 293rd Avenue, about two miles north of Paynesville.

55-year-old Gerald Johnson of Bemidji received medical treatment at the scene and was then airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment.

Johnson was on his second day of the “BAM” tour, biking from Albany to Spicer.

The driver of the car, a 22-year-old woman from Grove City, was treated at the scene.
