TIGERS NOTES:

  • ·    The Tigers defeated the Twins tonight to clinch the American League Central Division title…it is their third straight AL Central Division title, the second time in franchise to win three straight division titles, the other being 1907-09…the Tigers 93 wins are the second-most wins in the last seven seasons behind the 95 wins in 2011…the Tigers are 13-10 in 22 games in September…Detroit finishes the season with a record of 11-8 against the Twins this season, including 5-4 at Target Field and 6-4 at Comerica Park…Jim Leyland won his 700th game as skipper of the Tigers tonight and now has a managerial record of 700-594 with Detroit.
  • ·    Max Scherzer allowed two hits in 7.0 shutout innings tonight, his final start of the regular season…he struckout 10 and walked six in his 32nd start…Scherzer struckout Josmil Pinto in the first inning for his 232nd strikeout of the season, a new career-high…he had 10-plus strikeouts for the eighth time this season…he tossed a season-high 123 pitches, the most since he threw 127 on August 19, 2011 vs. Cleveland…he earned his 21st win of the season tonight, which is tied for second-most in Tigers history since 1974 (also Jack Morris in 1986 and behind Verlander’s 24 in 2011).
  • ·    Torii Hunter (2-for-4) collected his 56th multi-hit game of the season…coming into tonight he was fifth in the AL in multi-hit games…he has 15 hits in his last four starts…over his last seven games against the Twins he is hitting .406 (13-for-32) with six extra-base hits and seven RBI.
  • ·    Austin Jackson (2-for-4) hit his 37th career triple to lead off the game…it was his sixth of the season and first since August 31 vs. Cleveland…he had a hit in all three of the games at Target Field after coming into the series 2-for-last-20 over his previous four games.
  • ·    Victor Martinez (1-for-4) extended his current hit-streak to 12 games with an infield single in the seventh inning…over the 12 games he is hitting .386 (17-for-44)…the single set his career-high for hits in a single season (182), passing the 181 he had in 2006 with Cleveland…he has five doubles, seven RBI and seven extra-base hits in his last seven games.
  • ·    Omar Infante (1-for-3) extended his current hit-streak to nine games with a single in the second inning…over the nine games he is hitting .361 (13-for-36)…he has a hit in each of his last five games against the Twins, since August 21 at Comerica Park.

 

TWINS NOTES: ­

  • ·    The Twins lost to the Tigers tonight, falling to 8-11 against Detroit this season, including 4-5 at Target Field…nine of the 19 games between Detroit and Minnesota this season were decided by two runs-or-less, with the Twins going 4-5 in those…the Twins are now 29-43 against the AL Central…the Twins struckout 13 times tonight and have now struckout 1,382 times this season, passing the 2008 Florida Marlins (1,371) and 2010 Florida Marlins (1,375) for sole possession of fifth in MLB history…they now sit five strikeouts behind the 2012 Oakland A’s (1,387).
  • ·    Kevin Correia made his final start of the 2013 season tonight, finishing with a record of 9-13, 4.18 ERA (185.1 IP, 86 ER), 45 walks and 101 strikeouts…the 185.1 innings are the most since he tossed 198.0 innings with the Padres in 2009…the 101 strikeouts are the most since he had 115 in 2010 with the Padres…with the loss he failed to win 10 games this season for the first time since 2008…tonight was his 17th quality start of the season after he allowed just one run in 7.0 innings…the 17 quality outings are the second-most of his career (22 in 2009).
  • ·    Ryan Doumit (0-for-2) earned two walks tonight against Detroit pitching…has reached base safely in 10 straight games against the Tigers this season.
  • ·    Pedro Florimon (1-for-3) assisted in two double plays tonight giving him 101 this season which are second most among MLB shortstops behind Baltimore’s J.J. Hardy (107)…Florimon assisted in 14 double plays this season against the Tigers in 18 games played…he also stole his team-high 15th base tonight in the fifth inning.
  • ·    Chris Parmelee (1-for-4) has a hit in 10 of his last 12 games at Target Field, batting .310 (13-for-42) in those 12 games…hit .286 (16-for-56) with one home run and five RBI in 15 games against Detroit this season.
