INDIANS NOTES:

  • ·    The Indians defeated the Twins 5-1 today for their 91st victory of the season…the 91 wins are their most since going 96-66 in 2007… the Indians have now won nine games in a row, their longest of the season and longest since winning 10 straight August 17-27, 2008…Cleveland is now 43-32 against the AL Central this season and 40-40 on the road…the Indians have won five straight against the Twins and improve to 12-6 against Minnesota in 2013, including 6-3 at Target Field…with the victory, Tampa Bay’s loss and Texas’ loss, the Indians are 1.0 game ahead of both teams for the Wild Card lead in the American League.
  • ·    Scott Kazmir allowed one run on six hits and two walks while striking out 11 in 6.0 innings today…the 11 strikeouts marked the third time in his last five starts to have double-digit strikeouts in a start…he has allowed just one run in his last 13.0 innings…with the win he finishes 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA (158.0 IP, 71 ER)…it marked his sixth season with at least 10 wins and first since 2009 when he went 8-7 with Tampa Bay and 2-2 with Los Angeles-AL…he is the fourth Indian with 10 wins this season, the first time the Tribe has had four 10-game winners since 2006.
  • ·    Jason Kipnis (2-for-4) has hit safely in his sixth straight game hitting .458 (11-for-24) with three doubles, one triple and four RBI…is now hitting .422 (30-for-71) with 14 extra-base hits in 18 games against the Twins this season…he has 24 RBI against the Twins this season, tied third most in Twins history (since 1961) by an opposing player (Cabrera, 26 in 2012; Dick Stuart, 25 in 1963; Magglio Ordonez, 24 in 2002; Jim Thome, 24 in 2002).
  • ·    Michael Brantley (0-for-4) snapped his 11-game hit-streak today…over the 11 games he hit .467 (21-for-45) with 10 RBI and four extra-base hits.
  • ·    Carlos Santana (1-for-4) hit his 20th home run of the season with a two-run shot in the fourth inning off De Vries…he has at least one extra-base hit in five of his last six games…the home run was a go-ahead two-run shot, his eighth go-ahead homer of the season (2nd on Indians to Kipnis’ 9) and 23rd go-ahead RBI of the season (2nd to Kipnis’ 24)…he has hit safely in six straight games and 19 of the 26 games played in September…he is hitting .317 (25-for-79) with six doubles, three home runs and 16 walks in 22 games since September 6…when batting fourth in the lineup this season he is hitting .278 (45-for-162) with 26 runs scored, nine doubles, nine home runs and 28 RBI in 47 games.
  • ·    Michael Bourn (2-for-4) hit his 51st career triple today…it was the sixth of the season…he has 26 triples over his last three seasons, the fourth-most in the majors over that span behind Dexter Fowler (29), Austin Jackson (28) and Jose Reyes (28).
  • ·    Jason Giambi (0-for-2) left today’s game with left forearm cramping and is considered day-to-day.

 

TWINS NOTES: ­

  • ·    The Twins lost to the Indians today, falling to 6-12 against Cleveland this season, including 3-6 at Target Field…the Twins are now 29-46 against the AL Central…the Twins struckout 13 times today and have double-digit strikeouts in 65 games…the Twins have lost five straight, nine of their last 10 and 11 of their last 13 games…the Twins allowed all five runs today with two outs, and have given up a MLB-leading 311 runs this season with two outs.
  • ·    Delay: Today’s game was postponed a total of 2 hours and 26 minutes prior to first pitch due to rain.
  • ·    Cole De Vries allowed five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out seven in 5.0 innings today…he did not allow a hit until the fourth inning…the seven strikeouts set a career-high, passing the six strikeouts he had on June 30, 2012 vs. Kansas City…he had a total of seven strikeouts over his last four outings (16.0 IP).
