Willmar Police say a man allegedly held his girlfriend hostage for a month and threatened to drop a baby from a second story window New Year’s Eve.
KWLM reports 25-year-old Erik Ozornia made his initial appearance before Judge Jenna Fischer Thursday on felony charges of Domestic Assault and Terroristic Threats and a gross misdemeanor charge of Endangering a Child with a Situation that Could Cause Death.
Willmar Police Chief Dave Wyffels says Ozornia’s girlfriend called officers around 3 p.m. New Year’s Eve and said Ozornia had been holding her and two children against their will at a house on Southeast Augusta Avenue for the past month. She told officers she got away with one child and called for help, but when officers responded to the house, Ozornia grabbed the couple’s 6-month-old child, barricaded himself in a bedroom, and threatened to throw the baby out a second story window.
Wyffels says it took quite some time to convince Ozornia to give up and surrender the child. He says preventing injury, especially to innocent people, was the officer’s first priority and they did a good job.
Wyffels says the girlfriend had been beaten and abused by Ozornia.
Ozornia also had arrest warrants for prior offenses.
In court Thursday, bail was set at $20,000.
Ozornia’s next court appearance is a Rule 8 Hearing before Judge Don Spilseth Monday morning.
