A court hearing was held Monday in Brown County concerning alleged sexual abuse by priests of the New Ulm Diocese.
A man filed a lawsuit against the diocese In December saying he was abused at a church in Granite Falls as a boy by Reverend Francis Markey. His lawsuit also asked the diocese to release the names of 12 accused and admitted child molesters in their clergy.
New Ulm is the only diocese in the state that hasn’t released such a list. In court Monday the diocese argued to keep that list of priests credibly accused of molesting children private, saying that two priests say their names should not be included because the allegations against them are false.
The only priest molestation lawsuits filed in Brown County have been against David Roney, a priest who died. Reverend Markey was not a member of the diocese when the alleged molestation occurred, although he did serve at its churches.
Brown County Judge Robert Docherty is expected to issue a ruling on releasing the New Ulm list of priests soon.
