The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office has determined that the rural Stewart man found dead after walking away from his disabled car died of exposure.
Authorities say that 55-year-old Garry Kontz, and his 34-year-old son Shawn got their 1994 Saturn stuck in the snow Sunday night during blizzard-like conditions.
Shawn Kontz reportedly left the car on foot at around 11pm to go home and get another vehicle, but was forced to stop at a neighbor’s house due to the blowing snow and subzero temperatures.
Sheriff’s deputies and Stewart firefighters found the body of Garry Kontz Monday morning about two miles from his vehicle along McLeod County Road 7 south of Stewart.
The medical examiner determined that Kontz was a victim of hypothermia, but an investigation is ongoing.
