At just before 5:30pm Monday, the Renville County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of County Road 21 and 870th Avenue, which is about 4 miles north of Renville.
Preliminary investigation showed that an SUV driven by 67-year-old Karon Kay Gerdes of Kerkhoven was traveling northbound on County Road 21, while a pickup driven by 35-year-old Michael Allen Voelz of Renville was traveling eastbound on 870th Avenue.
Authorities say Voelz entered the intersection and collided with the Gerdes vehicle, causing that vehicle to enter the ditch and roll.
Gerdes’ minor grandson was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Gerdes was taken to Renville County Hospital and Clinics. Her grandson was taken to the same hospital. Gerdes was later airlifted to HCMC in Minneapolis with non-life threatening injuries.
Voelz was not injured.
All three were wearing seatbelts.
