A rural Darwin man has been sentenced to 270 days in jail for driving an ATV while drunk last spring and rolling it twice, severely injuring a little girl.
On May 12th, 31-year-old Michael Vollmer was giving 6-year-old Kylie Garfin a ride along the Luce Line Trail near Thompson Lake Park when he rolled the vehicle on an embankment.
KWLM reports Kylie suffered a bad cut on her face, but when a witness offered to take the girl to the hospital, Vollmer grabbed her and took off on the ATV, and rolled it a second time. Kylie suffered facial, brain and lung injuries and had to be airlifted to Children’s Hospital in the Twin Cities.
Vollmer’s blood alcohol content was .14, nearly twice the legal limit for driving.
Last month he pleaded guilty to one count of criminal vehicular operation, and earlier this month Judge Stephanie Beckman sentenced him to 270 days in jail and 5 years probation.
If he violates probation, Vollmer faces an 18 month prison sentenced.
