Saints can’t figure out Rockland 21 Jun 14

ST. PAUL, MN (June 20, 2014) – Apparently it doesn’t matter where the St. Paul Saints play the Rockland Boulders.  It could be Provident Bank Park, Midway Stadium or the moon, the Boulders offense is just as potent.  After giving up 37 runs in a three game series in Pomona, NY three weeks ago, the Saints pitching staff didn’t fare much better losing 9-4 on Friday night at Midway Stadium in front of 5,017.

The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second when Brandon Tripp hit a solo homer to straightaway center in the second, his third of the season and second in as many games, but that would be the last lead for the Saints.

The Boulders scored nine unanswered runs and got it started in the fourth.  Steve Nyisztor led off with a single and stole second.  A wild pitch moved him to third and with two outs Marcus Nidiffer walked.  Junior Arrojo dropped down a bunt base hit to third that scored Nyisztor.  On the play third baseman Joe Bonfe barehanded the bunt and threw to first, but the ball skipped away from Angelo Songco allowing Nidiffer to score from first and giving the Boulders a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth the Boulders tacked on three more runs as Antone DeJesus led off with a double.  He scored on a single by Ryan Stovall to make it 3-1.  With one on and two outs Joe Maloney’s RBI double made it 4-1 and Will Walsh followed with an RBI single to make it 5-1.

The Boulders put the game away with a four run seventh as Jerod Edmondson led off with a double.  He scored on a single from Nyisztor to make it 6-1.  After a Maloney single, Nidiffer hit a three-run homer, his first of the season, to give the Boulders a 9-1 lead.

Evan Bigley extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the sixth.  In the eighth he hit his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left, which got the Saints to within 9-3.  He finished the night 2-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored.

The same two teams meet Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. in game two of the three game series at Midway Stadium.  The Saints send LHP Cole Nelson (1-3, 4.21) to the mound against Boulders LHP Richard Salazar (1-2, 5.84).  It is Star Wars Night.
