Tiger Gameday – Week 7

Last Game:  Hutchinson 46 Delano 7

Game Recap: Last year’s games between these two teams were some of the best of the year, this one was another Hutch domination.  Hutchinson outgained Delano nearly 4 to 1, in moving to 6-0 on the year with a 46-7 win.  Robbie Grimsley led Hutchinson on the ground with 177 yards rushing and 3 TD’s.  With the rushing total, RG5 went over the 1,000 yard mark for the season.  Adam Elliot had an all around good night with 4 Rushing TD’s on 64 yards, plus he intercepted a pass on defense.  Hutchinson is all alone in first place in the WCC Eastern Division after previously unbeaten Waconia was upset by Orono.

Current Record: 6-0

This Week’s Opponent: Holy Family (5-1)

About the Opponent: 2 years ago the Tigers beat Holy Family in the Prep Bowl, but last year was a different story.  Holy Family went 3-7 last year struggling a lot on the defensive side of the ball.  This year has been a nice turn around again for the Fire who are now 5-1 this season.  The Fire defense has improved a little bit, they are giving up some points again this year.  One big change is the Fire Offense.  HF hasn’t scored less than 26 points in a game all year, heck even in their loss they scored 36.  The Fire Offense goes through Chazz Johnson.  The 3 year starter has over 1,000 yards rushing already and by all accounts running with more (pun intended) Fire this year.

Key Hutch Players: We’re going to go with the Defensive Line here.  Stopping Chazz Johnson is a must for a win.  While that task doesn’t solely rest on the line, it will get a bulk of the responsibility.  The past two games against Johnson, Hutch has done very well in containing him.  They’ll need to do it again to get a win.

Games Storylines:

  1. The Fire’s unconventional offense.  Yes that’s a tackle or a guard you’ll see out by the receivers, yes that’s only 4 people sometime along the traditional line of scrimmage. Playing defense against this offense can be tough because it puts a lot of pressure on reading and recognizing who’s eligible, who’s not, who’s getting the ball.  You need good team defense against an offense like this.    HF will throw the ball a bit as well here, need DB’s to have good coverage also.
  2. I need to mention the other RB in this 1,000 yard battle and that’s Hutchinson’s Robbie Grimsley.  He’s been fantastic this year, plus his helpers in Adam Elliot and Peyton Lenz were also very good last week.  Hutchinson’s offense has been stellar all year long, scoring early and often puts a lot of pressure on teams.
  3. Mistakes and turnovers.  This is a game that can hinge on  mistakes.  Hutch hasn’t been great in the turnover radio this year.  They were a +3 last week though and penalties were at a minimum.
  4. Finish Strong.  If winning another state title wasn’t enough motivation, how’s this for you.  If the playoffs started today, Hutchinson would be the #2 seed in the section tournament.  The QRF rating is how teams are seeded, and right now Marshall has a 4 point lead over Hutch.  That will likely change IF Hutch just wins their final two games.  Hutchinson will get more points for beating two VERY good teams, while Marshall’s last two opponents will likely finish with 3 wins combined.  BUT…the schedule doesn’t matter if you don’t win.
  5. A useless/interesting fact for you… Hutchinson has played Holy Family 3 times only in their short history.  Three times that HF would like to forget.  In those three previous games, Hutchinson has outscored Holy Family 174-14.  Ouch!
