Tiger Gameday – Week 8

Last Game:  Hutchinson 62 Holy Family 7 33RD STRAIGHT VICTORY

Game Recap: The Hutchinson Tigers are conference champions for the 4th straight year with a 62-7 win over Holy Family of Victoria.  Hutchinson jumped out to an early 28-0 lead in the first quarter.  Included in that first quarter was an Interception returned by Adam Elliot for a Touchdown.  Elliot also caught a 65 yard Touchdown reception.  Robbie Grimsley had 3 Touchdowns on the night, while Peyton Lenz rushed for 2.  QB Marcus Hahn went 11/14 for 227 yards and 2 Touchdowns.  The defense stood up 4 times on 4th and 1 plays, including one on the 1 yard line.

Current Record: 7-0

This Week’s Opponent: Waconia (4-3) FINAL CONFERENCE GAME EVER

About the Opponent: What was looking like a chance for Waconia to also take a share of the conference title has gone by the wayside, when New Prague upset Waconia last week…giving the WCC East title to Hutchinson outright.  Waconia with their second year coach has made big strides in improvement over last year.  The Wildcats put up a ton of points early in the season, before being held to just 3 touchdowns combined in the past 2 weeks, both losses.  QB Shannon Storley has thrown the ball for over 1,000 yards, while RB Mason Hemze is nearing 800 yards for the season.  Waconia has a bunch of great receivers also (which we’ll get to in the next segment).  Defensively they have been solid giving up more than two scores in a game only 3 times.

Key Hutch Players: DB’s and the DE/LB Hybrids get the nod here.  Waconia has Four very solid recievers they go to.   Nathen Glynn, Nick Heenie, Royce Marker, and Lucas Zimmer all have at least 210 yards receiving, and all have caught touchdowns.  Everyone needs to be on their game since everyone’s coverage skills will get tested.  With all those receivers Hutch may be forced into a lot of man coverage, may not be much safety help.

Games Storylines:

  1. We focused a lot so far on the Waconia offense, now for the Hutch offense.  Hutch has done a great job of putting pressure on the opposing team by stellar execution by the O-Line and good speed in the backfield.  Hutchinson has been up big in each of their games so far, and that puts pressure on opposing teams to match that and play perfectly.  Getting another early lead is big.
  2.  Passing game got going last week, nice to see QB Marcus Hahn get in time with his receivers.  He’s used a number of them this year and has confidence in them all.  Running is still bread and butter, but the “Jam” of the passing offense is looking good.
  3. Mistakes and turnovers.  Turnovers, Hutchinson was very good in last week finishing +2 in that category, penalties reared their ugly head again.  It’s been a problem all year.  Whether you agree or disagree with the call…you can’t put yourself in close call situations.  Plus some of those 15 yarders weren’t even close calls.  Just can’t do it.
  4. I Hate putting this one down, but I’m going to after seeing last week.  Stay injury free.  I hate saying that because if you play not to get injured you have a better chance of getting injured.  But the point still stays…RB Chazz Johnson went down last week for Holy Family and we haven’t heard how serious it is.  But if he’s out for a few weeks that alters their entire playoffs.  For both Hutch and Waconia, they have high hopes for the playoffs and neither wants an injury in a game that doesn’t have much bearing on the conference standings.  Now both teams need this game for Section Standings…Hutch to gain the #1 seed in their section, and Waconia to try and bump up the standings in their ultra tough 5A Section.
  5. A useless/interesting fact for you…  Hutchinson has not lost a conference game in 4 years.  In the 2010 season though, Hutch went only 4-4 in WCC play.  The team that held Hutchinson to it’s lowest point total that season…Waconia.  In week 4 of that year, Hutch managed only a field goal vs. the Wildcats.
