Tiger Gameday Preview – State Q’finals 05 Nov 14

Tiger Gameday – State Quarterfinals

Last Game:  Hutchinson 49 Waseca 14 36TH STRAIGHT WIN

Game Recap: The Hutchinson Tigers won the Section 2AAAA Championship for the 3rd straight year with a convincing 49-14 win over Waseca Friday night.  The Tigers would get on the board first.  One play after forcing a Waseca fumble, QB Marcus Hahn found TE Grant Baumetz for a 50 yard TD reception.  Baumetz would add an 18 yard TD reception later in the game.  Robbie Grimsley rushed for 110 yards and 3 TD’s for Hutchinson.  Payton Lenz and Jayden Fleck added Touchdown runs for the Tigers, who won their 36th straight game.

Current Record: 10-0

This Week’s Opponent: #2 Holy Angels (10-0)

About the Opponent: Another week, another rematch.  This time a rematch of last year’s prep bowl.  Last year it was an RG5 sighting that had HA seeing Stars in a record setting Prep Bowl performance.  This year’s Stars are similar to last years.  QB Anthony Ekholm does a nice job of running the spread.  He’s run for almost 1,000 yards and passed for almost 1,000 yards, to go with 23 TD’s.   When it’s not Ekholm, Danny Hoffman, Greg Knaack and Luke Mulepas are main weapons.  Defensively the Stars bring a lot of people to the line, and will blitz.  LB Luke Matlon has 9 sacks this year and 15 Tackles for a loss.

Key Hutch Players: Last week we talked about the blitz, we’ll stay with that theme…but instead we’ll talk about the OL/TE’s.  In Hutch’s offense the Tight ends often act like extra tackles, especially with Baumetz and Bobo out there.  That’s 7 offensive Lineman…and all of them do a nice job of picking up blitzes.  They’ll certainly be tested Friday.

Games Storylines:

  1. Last year Hutchinson was up 28-0 before the Tigers had run 10 plays.  While we don’t expect that again…Hutch has been good at jumping to big leads and making teams play from behind.  That’s a big help to a defense knowing they can take chances and go for plays, knowing the offense has their back with good starts.
  2. I almost should’ve put this as key #1, but the biggest key to the game is Hutchinson’s ability to stop/contain QB Anthony Ekholm.  Ekholm is a player like RG5, he can take over a game.  Last year, while he was a bit under the weather, Hutch did a great job of bottling him up.  Do that again and it’ll be tough for HA to keep up with the Tigers.
  3. Mistakes.  Last week’s game was brought to you by Maytag Laundry, Tanning , and Car Wash who remind you when you have a lot of laundry hitting the field, clean it up!  J  Ok, jokes aside…there was about 30 penalties in last weeks game combined…and most were well deserved penalties.  This has got to change.  Good teams don’t give the opposition 100+ free yards.
  4. Rivaly/Revenge factor.  Last year’s game was the first in a while the two former Missota Conference schools had met.  And while the rivalry wasn’t as intense as it had been in years past (RG5 may have had something to do with that) it still is a rivalry.  The kids now a days don’t know the emotions of years past, but fans and parents do.  Plus you have to believe that HA is going to be out for revenge after Hutch hung one on them last year in the title game.  I expect a darn good game, and everyone needs to be ready for it.
  5. A useless/interesting fact for you…Everyone knows about former Holy Angels WR Larry Fitzgerald and his success.  How about two more famous alum’s you may not have known about…Actress Kelly Carlson (formerly in the Nip/Tuck show on FX) and Actor T.R. Knight (who starred for a few years in Grey’s Anatomy).
