Watkins Church Secretary Pleads Guilty to Check Forgery 13 Jan 16

(Litchfield) – A former Watkins church secretary pleaded guilty Monday to check forgery after church officials discovered in 2014 that she had allegedly stolen more than $21,000 over several years.

The West Central Tribune reports 53-year-old Renee Cecilia Miller had been a secretary at St. Anthony Catholic Church for 15 years.

A criminal complaint alleges she took thousands of dollars of funds over seven years from church collections and accounts. She also allegedly issued herself additional paychecks beyond her authorized salary.

The criminal complaint also states that she failed to pay the church’s state and federal payroll taxes.

Miller was originally charged in January 2015 in Meeker County District Court with seven felony counts of check forgery and three felony counts of theft by check. The counts carried offense dates ranging from 2008 to 2014.

In a plea hearing Monday, Miller pleaded guilty to two felony check forgery charges. The other charges will be dismissed at sentencing.

A sentencing in the matter is set for April 8.
