UND Golf could be spared 01 Jul 16

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The men’s golf program at the University of North Dakota might be spared if it can raise enough money.

The school announced in April that it was cutting men’s golf and baseball from its athletic offerings due to state budget cuts.

WDAZ-TV reports that the golf program submitted a funding plan that Interim UND President Ed Schafer approved on Wednesday.

The team will be allowed to compete next season if it can raise enough money by August 30th. The fundraising deadline for the 2017 to 2018 season is June 1st, 2017. Schafer says the plan also provides for an endowment to sustain the golf program beyond 2018.

Coach Tim Swanson says he’s confident the money can be raised.
