Tiger Gameday – Week 2, 2016

Last Game: Hutchinson 37 Becker 34

Game Recap: The 2016 Season kicked off with the last two schools to win the last 4 State Championships in Class 4A Football.  In the end, Hutchinson never trailed but needed a 26 yard Field Goal by Travis Trettin with no time on the clock to get the win and upset the Defending State Champion Becker Bulldogs.  Hutchinson opened the scoring getting an 87 yard Kickoff Return for a Touchdown from Maguire Petersen on the games opening Kickoff.  Petersen would add two more Touchdowns receiving in the game.  While, RB Isaiah Nelson rushed for 151 yards and 2 Touchdowns himself.  Becker Freshman QB Josh Fobbe went 14/22 with 217 yards passing and 4 TD’s to lead the Bulldogs.  Becker came back from down 14 points to tie the game with 1:34 left.  Hutchinson then went on a drive to get deep in Becker territory to set up the Game Winner from Trettin.

Current Record: 1-0

This Week’s Opponent: Glencoe Silver Lake (1-0)

About the Opponent: The Panthers have been Hutch’s Arch Rivals for the past number of years, and tonight’s game will be the final game in the rivalry (until the MSHSL moves around teams in District play again). GSL has a very good team again, as usual. They are coming off a nice Overtime win over New London Spicer. Expect to see the Panthers run the ball with their great backs, and expect tough defense. GSL’s game plan never seems to change. Why change it if it works?

Key Hutch Players: DL and LB’s. It’s an absolute MUST when you are playing GSL that if you want to win the game, you MUST stop their run. That’s easier said than done most years. Expect to see a lot of Michael Forar and Carson Streich for GSL. The Defensive front for Hutchinson had…issues…tackling last week. Gonna have to shore that up this week and play responsibly in your gap to contain.

Games Storylines:

  1. Execution. Both teams know each other so well…Hutch knows what GSL is all about, GSL knows what Hutch is all about. That puts the teams in an interesting situation. Nothing should surprise each other, but the team that can execute their blocks, their plays, their tackling, etc…should be the team on top.

  2. Get more than 1 drive in a half. That’s all Hutch had last year in the first half vs. GSL. And they only had 4 Drives for the game. Good long drives are fine and dandy, but you need to score on them. Plus defensively you have to be able to get off the field on 3rd down.

  3. Emotions. This is a HUGE rivalry, Emotions will be high. Plus couple that with the fact both teams had close wins in Week 1, dials up the intensity. Control that intensity, play at a high level, Enjoy playing the game. After all…we won’t see this kind of a game again for a LONG time.

  4. Quick Hit Keys…Last time Hutch won a game with a FG? Few years ago vs Becker (we got that question a lot last week)…Special Teams can be huge, return game was downright fantastic last week…shuffling lineups? Still trying to find players that fit into the correct spot.

  5. A useless/interesting fact…A nod to this rivalry. The Schools have combined in their history for 35 State Tournament appearances, 10 State Championships, and a few NFL Players. Those numbers get bigger if we included Silver Lake’s 9 man years. Sorry to see this rivaly go. :-(
