Tiger Gameday – Week 3

Last Game: Hutchinson 28 GSL 14

Game Recap: In what will be the final game in this storied rivalry for a number of years, the Hutchinson Tigers scored 14 unanswered points to upend GSL 28-14.  After GSL tied the game at 14 early in the second half, Hutchinson FB Christian Kurth scored his 3rd TD of the game to give Hutch the lead, and then with about 3 minutes left in the game Isaiah Nelson iced the game with a 5 yard TD run.  Nelson finished the game with 251 yards rushing, while Travis Trettin added 95 yards rushing.  Hutch moves to 2-0 on the season, and 1-0 in District play.

Current Record: 2-0

This Week’s Opponent: Watertown Mayer (0-2)

About the Opponent: In what might be WM’s only time ever in Hutchinson with the District shifts going down next year. The Royals bring an improving team to Hutch. Last year was a struggle for the Royals going 0-9, this year they have started 0-2 but have only lost by a TD in both games. The were a young team last year that has some experience now and knows what it takes to get over the hump. It’s just a question of when they get over that hump into some wins.

Key Hutch Players: We’re going to go with the Defensive Line. Watertown Mayer will run a Veer Offense and when you defend that, one of the keys is to not give up 4, 5, 6 yards on first down. Playing good assignment defense and take away big yards. Force them into 2nd and 8 or 2nd and 7. A Veer Offense doesn’t want to throw the ball..doesn’t mean they can’t throw it…they don’t want to. Tackling needs to improve for the Tigers Defense as well as the season goes on.

Games Storylines:

  1. Play your game Offensively. To a certain extent Hutch has done that in the first two weeks, but they’ve also had lapses as well. WM will feature a Big DL and Good LB’ers that can pursue. OL needs to block well, RB’s need to run well, Offense needs to click.

  2. Youth is Served. Friday will feature the 2nd time in as many years as Hutch will have a Freshman Starting on Defense. Last year it was Christian Kurth (and that worked out well)…now it’s Tyler Schiller who moves into a starting Safety spot. With Shiller, and fellow DB Max Petersen, LB Christian Kurth, DL Marcus Smahel, QB Lane Glaser…Hutch has some youth at key spots. But So far, these players have come up big…every game is a time for them to improve. All those players are physically able to play their position well…now needs to come the mental game.

  3. Turnovers are always key in a game. Last Week Hutch lost the turnover battle 0-2. It turned out to not matter as Hutch pulled away in the end. Also, keep the great clean play going. Hutch has done a FANTASTIC job of keeping the laundry off the field. Not a lot of penalties…well, compared to last year.

  4. Quick Hit Keys…Find some depth, Hutch has been able to find some players who can step in, who’s next to step up?…expect a lot of Cover 3 Defense from WM…Tired? WM will have some 2 way players that never come off the field.

  5. A useless/interesting fact…30 years ago this season the WM Royals won their one and only State Football Championship. A Class B title win over Granite Falls in 1986.
