Litchfield Man Struck by Train in Waverly 21 Feb 17

An 18-year from Litchfield is in critical condition after he was hit by a train in Waverly Monday night as he was walking on the tracks.

The Wright County Sheriff’s Office says Tre Ertl was taken to a metro hospital for treatment.

Authorities say at about 7:30 Monday night, they received a report of a pedestrian that was struck by a train near 4th St in Waverly.

Responders found an adult male, later identified as Ertl, on the north side of the tracks just east of the city limits.

The initial investigation indicates a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was traveling eastbound and saw a male walking on the tracks. Despite sounding the train’s horn and applying the brakes, the train struck the pedestrian.

The accident remains under investigation by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office.
