WASHINGTON, D.C. —On Wednesday (March 8), Senator Al Franken (D-Minn.) will host his seventh annual competition to determine which member of the Minnesota Congressional Delegation makes the best hotdish casserole.
He will be joined by the rest of the Minnesota delegation, including Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Reps. Collin Peterson, Betty McCollum, Keith Ellison, Tim Walz, Rick Nolan, Erik Paulsen, Tom Emmer, and Jason Lewis.
“After a long, divisive election year, I’m looking forward to putting partisanship aside by bringing together my Minnesota colleagues in our annual hotdish competition,” said Sen. Franken. “It’s always fun to see what dishes everyone comes up with, and it’s even more fun to spend some quality time bonding over hotdish with the other members of the Minnesota delegation.”
Sen. Franken started the friendly competition in 2011 as a way to bring the delegation together to put partisanship aside and celebrate a Minnesota culinary tradition. Each member will provide a hotdish—traditional Minnesota fare, similar to a casserole—which will be judged based on taste, presentation, and originality.
Rep. Walz holds the record for the most hotdish victories. His “Turkey Taco Hotdish” took the top prize in 2016, his “Turkey Trot Tater-Tot Hotdish” won in 2014 his “Hermann the German Hotdish” took first place in 2013. Rep. Betty McCollum broke his winning streak in 2015 with her “Turkey, Sweet Potato and Wild Rice Hotdish.”
After the event, recipes of all of the entries will be posted on Sen. Franken’s website at franken.senate.gov.
