Crow River Habitat Home Ground Blessing 05 May 17

(HUTCHINSON, MN) April Olson and her children will begin the construction of their new home in Hutchinson—and the community is invited to join in on the celebration!

The informal ground blessing ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, (May 6) at 429 Grant Ave SE in Hutchinson.

Along with local Habitat for Humanity representatives and a Thrivent Financial representative, the family will speak during a short program.

This is the 25th family to partner with Crow River Habitat for Humanity since 1994.

This summer, April and her family will complete at least 200 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build it, a basic tenet of Habitat for Humanity. She will also repay the zero-interest mortgage over a period of 25-35 years, illustrating Habitat for Humanity’s objective to give families a “hand up” rather than a “hand out.”

Up front building costs will be covered by Habitat for Humanity fundraising, including $82,500 from Thrivent Financial, $15,000 from the Wells Fargo Foundation, and $5,000 from United Way of McLeod County.

April has five children, four who live with her currently in Winsted in a rented home that is too small for them and has black mold.

If you’d like to sign up to volunteer to build or bring lunches this summer for the project, you can visit crhfh.org.

Build days are typically on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 8:30am to 3:30pm June through November 2017.

Officials say all build days will be announced soon.
