Willmar PD Pull Suicidal Man to Safety 08 Jun 17

WILLMAR – Police officers pulled a 37-year-old Murdock man to safety as he was threatening to jump off a railing on the busy First Street Bridge in Willmar early Wednesday afternoon.

According to Police Chief Jim Felt, as an officer trained in crisis intervention spoke to the man, other officers were able to covertly approach the man and pull him from the railing to safety.

Officers restrained the man, who was resistive, and transported him to Rice Memorial Hospital where he was to undergo a mental health evaluation.

Felt said the man was suicidal while on the railing, making statements such as “it’s a good day to die” before officers successfully intervened.

Traffic was rerouted during the incident.
