High Winds and Hail Hit the Area 12 Jun 17

Severe thunderstorms blew through the area Sunday morning, producing hail, rains, strong winds and lightning.

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts reaching 60 mph in many areas. Winds in Meeker County hit 80 mph.

The Minnesota State Patrol says two people were hurt when wind gusts flipped a pickup and camper as the driver was moving onto the shoulder on a county road in Meeker County. They were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Xcel Energy reports as of Sunday night, about 34,000 customers were still without power, with crews continuing to work on restoring power.

Xcel says the weather event caused outages for more than 132,000 people.

Sunday’s thunderstorms and strong winds caused approximately 1,000 McLeod Co-op Power customers to lose power.

Officials say outages were widespread over more than four counties.

Crews worked all day and into Sunday night to get power restored to all Co-op members by midnight.
