Willmar/Police Shooting 24 Jul 17

(KWLM/Willmar, MN)  A man is hospitalized after a shooting by police in northwest Willmar Sunday afternoon.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says at about 5:30 p.m., Willmar Police got a 911 call about a suicidal man at an address on 11th Street Northwest in Willmar. 

The home is just south of Ella Avenue, across the street from the Islamic Society of Willmar. 

The BCA says the officers encountered a man with a gun in the backyard of the home, and at some point, both officers fired at him. Witnesses say they hear four shots.

Willmar Police, Ambulance, the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Department and the state patrol all responded and blocked off the street.

A man was brought from the house and taken by Ambulance to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar and then airlifted to the St. Cloud Hospital. His name and current condition have not been released. 

Both officers involved in the shooting are on standard administrative leave. Their names are also being withheld at this time.

Willmar police do not have body cams and the squad camera did not capture the incident, which remains under investigation.

When complete, the info will be turned over to the Kandiyohi County Attorney’s Office.
