Dassel Man Arrested After 64-mile High-speed Chase 18 Oct 17

(KSTP/Waite Park, MN) A 47-year-old Dassel man was arrested after a police chase that lasted almost an hour and covered 64 miles before ending near Royalton Monday night.

KSTP reports the incident began in the parking lot of Cash Wise Foods in Waite Park.

A release from Waite Park police states a parking lot maintenance worker in a street sweeper reported being approached by a male individual in a vehicle, who began yelling at him and threatening him.

That worker called police, who responded to the scene where the suspect’s vehicle was still in the parking lot driving in circles.

Once seeing police lights, however, the release states the driver, identified as Jason Michael Ashwill, took off, eventually reaching Highway 15 and headed south at speeds that reached around 100 miles an hour.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and the Kimball Police Department deployed stop sticks, which succeeded in flattening one tire.

But the release states the suspect continued driving on the rims at speeds in excess of 50 miles per hour. Finally, a Morrison County deputy performed a PIT maneuver and took Ashwill into custody.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Department reports the suspect’s vehicle later started on fire, bringing Little Falls police to the scene to extinguish it.

Ashwill is being held at Stearns County Jail on possible charges of fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle and damage to property.
