Update: Bird Island Home Explosion/Fire 16 Jan 18

(Bird Island, MN) On Monday afternoon, just after 4:30, the Renville County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls reporting smoke coming from a home in Bird Island following an apparent explosion.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from the structure, a single-story home, owned and occupied by Jeffrey and Sheena Ackerson at 260 Dogwood Avenue.  All of the home’s occupants were accounted for and were safe, however, a dog did die in the blaze.  Nobody was home at the time of the fire, but the homeowner discovered the fire upon his return home.  Firefighters’ efforts were hindered by sub-zero temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills.

Firefighters remained on the scene until after 10:00 PM.

The home sustained heavy fire damage and is a total loss.

Firefighters were on scene again this morning (Tuesday) extinguishing hot spots.

The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting with the investigation of the fire.  Its cause and origin have not yet been determined.

The Bird Island, Olivia and Hector Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene, along with the Bird Island Medical Response Unit, Olivia Ambulance Service and Renville County Sheriff’s Office.
