1 Dead after St. James Officer-Involved Shooting 01 Feb 18

(KSTP/St. James, MN)  One man was killed and a police officer was injured in an officer-involved shooting in St. James.

According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Nicollet County sheriff’s deputies spotted a vehicle Wednesday morning that had been reported stolen in New Ulm. Officers pursued the car, but later called the pursuit off for safety reasons.

A while later, the vehicle was spotted by law enforcement in St. James. Officers followed the vehicle until the driver ran it into a snow bank. The BCA said the driver fled into a business on the 600 block of Second Avenue South. Officers entered the building, where they deployed Tasers multiple times. One officer later discharged his firearm, striking the individual.

The BCA said a knife was recovered at the scene.

The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

One officer suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The officer who discharged his firearm has been placed on standard administrative leave as the investigation continues.
