Court Approves Plea Deal for Belle Plaine Teen Involved in Fatal Crash 14 Feb 18

(Gaylord, MN)  A Belle Plaine teen who fatally struck a bicyclist with her vehicle while Snapchatting on her phone is expected to be sentenced to community service and probation.

The 17-year-old pleaded guilty to gross misdemeanor reckless driving Tuesday in Sibley County Juvenile Court after the court approved a plea agreement, reducing the charge from a felony to a gross-misdemeanor, despite the objections of the victim’s family.

The plea agreement allowed the dismissal of the felony vehicular homicide charge.

The girl, then 16-years-old, had a provisional license at the time of the crash that prohibited her from using a cellphone while driving.

The plea agreement calls for her to complete 200 hours of community service, places her on probation until her 19th birthday, and prohibits her from driving until 2019.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 11th.
