MN Officer Charged with Murder in Damond’s Death 21 Mar 18

(Various/Minneapolis, MN) — A Minnesota cop is under arrest in connection with the shooting death of an Australian woman.

Minneapolis Officer Mohamed Noor is being held on 500-thousand dollars bail after being charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Noor shot Justine Damond to death last July after responding to a reported sexual assault outside her home.

The shooting led to the firing of Police Chief Janee Harteau. No video of the shooting exists because Noor and his partner did not have their body cameras on.

An attorney for Noor says the officer should not have been charged with a crime in the fatal shooting.

Thomas Plunkett says Officer Noor was acting according to his training when he shot and killed Justine Ruszczyk Damond last July.

Damond approached Noor’s squad car just minutes after calling 911 to report a possible sexual assault in the alley behind her house.

Plunkett says it appears Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman planned to charge Noor long before he convened a grand jury to gather information in the case.
