Carver/McLeod County Chase 16 May 18

A Shorewood woman was injured Tuesday after being struck at an intersection by a driver authorities say was fleeing police in a stolen vehicle.

According to a release from the Carver County Sheriff’s Department, 42-year-old Katy Esmerald Perez-Velazquez was taken to the 212 Medical Center in Chaska after her vehicle was struck at Highway 7 and Minnewashta Parkway.

KSTP reports the driver of the other vehicle, identified as 37-year-old Vernon Terry Surratt of Coon Rapids, received what were said to be minor injuries and was treated at the 212 Medical Center before being taken to the Carver County jail.

The release alleges Surratt fled when a deputy tried to stop the vehicle, which had been reported stolen out of Shakopee, at around 10:21 a.m. Tuesday. Deputies reportedly pursued him west on Highway 7 into McLeod County, south through Lester Prairie and back into rural portions of Carver County before turning east on Highway 7.

The McLeod County Sheriff’s Department, the Lester Prairie Police Department, the state patrol, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Minnetrista Public Safety Department and South Lake Minnetonka Public Safety all assisted.

The release stated that as Surratt approached the intersection at which Perez-Velazquez was stopped, he swerved to avoid tire deflation devices and lost control of the vehicle.

He allegedly attempted to flee after colliding with the other vehicle, but was boxed in by authorities.
