    1. December 8 All Saints Lutheran Church Christmas Craft & Bake Sale
      8:30 am – 1:00 pm

      All Saints Lutheran Church (118 North 1st Street) in Darwin is having a Christmas Craft & Bake Sale with a luncheon and basket raffle on Saturday, December 8th, from 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM, including a lefse making demonstration beginning at 8:30 AM. The luncheon, featuring barbecue sandwiches, chips and dip, fruit, veggies, a dessert and beverages, will be served from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. The cost for the luncheon is $6.00 for everyone over the age of 10, and $3.00 for children 10 years of age and younger.

    2. December 8 Free Community Breakfast at Bethlehem United Methodist Church
      8:30 am – 9:30 am

      Bethlehem United Methodist Church (665 Miller Ave SW) in Hutchinson is offering a  free, hot breakfast from 8:30 – 9:30  AM on Saturday, December 8th.  Everyone is welcome, and while there is no cost, they would appreciate it if you would contact the church (call  320-587-3312 )  to let them know how many will be attending.  You may also pick up a ticket at Common Cup Ministry’s office (218 Main Street South) in Hutchinson.  The free breakfast is served on the second Saturday of each month.

    3. December 8 St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (Hector) Cookie Walk
      8:30 am – 11:00 am

      St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (500 Cedar Avenue East) in Hector will have its 16th Annual Cookie Walk on Saturday, December 8th, from 8:30 – 11:00 AM or until the goodies are gone. The cookie walk will feature traditional and fancy cookies, plus homemade lefse and candles. Proceeds will go to elevator maintenance and the church flooring project.

    4. December 8 Bake Sale & Chili Luncheon at Prairie Community Church
      11:00 am – 1:30 pm

      Prairie Community Church (700 1st Avenue North) in Lester Prairie is having a Bake Sale & Chili Luncheon on Saturday, December 8th, from 11:00 AM – 1:30 PM. It’s the easy way to get your holiday baking done and you’ll enjoy the chili luncheon, featuring chili, egg salad sandwiches, cake, milk and coffee.

    5. December 8 First Evangelical Lutheran Church Christmas Bazaar
      11:00 am – 1:00 pm

      First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cosmos will have its Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, December 8th, at the Cosmos American Legion (100 East Astro Boulevard) in Cosmos. The hours for the bazaar will be from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM.

    1. December 9 Community Bingo at Ecumen Oaks & Pines
      2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

      Area seniors are invited to play Community Bingo on Sunday, December 9th, from 2:00 – 3:00 PM in the Dining Room at the Ecumen Oaks & Pines (1015 Century Avenue SW) in Hutchinson. The cost is 25 cents per card for each regular game. The last game will be a “cover all” game and will be $1.00 per card, winner takes all. Coffee and snacks will follow the fun!     2. December 9 Compassionate Friends Remembrance Candle Lighting
      7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

      The Hutchinson Area Chapter of The Compassionate Friends, an organization offering grief support after the death of a child, will host its 11th Annual Remembrance Candle Lighting on Sunday, December 9th, at the Dobratz-Hantge Funeral Chapel (899 Highway 15 S) in Hutchinson, beginning at 7:00 PM. The event is open to anyone who would like to come and light a candle in remembrance of a child who has died too soon, whether it be your own child, or that of a neighbor, co-worker, relative or friend. The local event is happening in conjunction with the Compassionate Friends worldwide candle lighting. Refreshments and a time of sharing will follow. For more information, call Jo at 320-833-2300 .

    1. December 11 – 13 Sibley County Santa’s Helper Gift Distribution
      8:00 am – 5:00 pm

      The Santa’s Helpers program in Sibley County will have its 2012 Gift Distribution on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, December 11th, 12th and 13th at American Lutheran Church (911 8th Street) in Gaylord.  Each child will be presented with a gift valued at $20.00, a pair of mittens and a hat.     1. December 18 Caregiver Support Group Meeting
      1:30 pm – 3:00 pm

      The next meeting of the Renville County Hospice Caregiver Support Group will be on Tuesday, December 18th, from 1:30 – 3:00 PM in the Willette Room of RC Hospital & Clinics (611 East Fairview) in Olivia. The meeting is free of charge, and there will be time for discussion and support. Future meetings are scheduled the third Tuesday of each month. Also, it is possible to have your care receiver spend the afternoon at Heart to Heart Adult Day Services. For more information, contact Paulette Svoboda at 320-523-3451.

    1. December 20 REACH Program’s Holiday Celebration Outreach Supper
      6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

      The Hutchinson area REACH Program will host a Holiday Celebration Outreach Supper on Thursday, December 20th, from 6:00 – 7:00 PM at Peace Lutheran Church (400 Franklin Street SW) in Hutchinson.  The supper is for individuals and/or families in the area in need this holiday season.  The meal is free, but they do ask that if you’re planning to attend that you pick up a free tickets at Peace Lutheran Church or Common Cup Ministry so they know to prepare for how many.

    1. December 21 Matthew 14:16 Supper and Free Movie Night at Peace Lutheran Church
      5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

      Peace Lutheran Church (400 Franklin Street SW) of Hutchinson will host its monthly Matthew 14:16 Supper on Friday, December 21st, beginning at 5:00 PM.  The event offers a free, warm, nourishing meal, to anyone in the community.  Following the supper, they’ll have their free family movie night, beginning at 6:30 PM.  Come enjoy the movie as well as some free popcorn and lemonade

    1. December 22 Lunch With Santa
      11:00 am – 2:00 pm

      NAMI Meeker/McLeod Counties and the Foundation for Challenged Children (FFCC) invite you to Lunch with Santa on Saturday, December 22nd, from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the McLeod County Fairgrounds (780 Century Avenue SW) in Hutchinson. You can enjoy a lunch of a hot dog, cookie, chips and a beverage. Bring your camera and have your picture taken with Santa. The event will also feature music by “Chopper – The World’s Nuttiest DJ,” games, prizes, treat bags, a limbo contest, a dance contest, a small flea market and more. The cost is a $4.00 donation plus a donation for the McLeod Emergency Food Shelf. The event is co-sponsored by Econofoods.

    1. January 3 “Happy Feet, Happy Heart” 5K Run/Walk Registration Underway
      1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

      Registration is underway for the Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center’s “Happy Feet, Happy Heart” 5K Run/Walk and Half-Mile Kids Run on Saturday, February 23rd. The cost for the 5K Run/Walk is $15.00 if you pre-register or $20.00 the day of the race. There is no cost for children to participate in the Half-Mile Kids Run. Runners will receive a t-shirt for participating. Proceeds will benefit BLHC’s Friends and Relatives Enabling the Elderly (F.R.E.E.) Organization.     1. January 6th Bullhead Feed

      The Brownton Rod and Gun Club will have its annual Bullhead Feed on January 6th starting at 10 a.m. till gone. The Brownton Rod and Gun Club is located off Highway 15 near Lake Marion.

    2. January 6 BASICS Holiday Concert
      3:30 pm – 4:30 pm

      The BASICS (Brothers And Sisters In Christ Singers) will perform a holiday concert on Sunday, January 6th, beginning at 3:30 PM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (201 South Street) in Stewart.  A free will donation lunch will follow the concert.  Proceeds will be used to further the BASIC music ministry.

    3. February 6 Family Style Turkey Supper at Zion United Methodist Church
      4:30 pm – 7:30 pm

      Zion United Methodist Church (306 2nd Street NW) in Buffalo Lake will serve its annual Family Style Turkey Supper on Wednesday, February 6th, from 4:30 – 7:30 PM with take out orders available for the entire time. Advance tickets are priced at $8.50, and are available at CenBank, Main Street Market, the Straw Hat Grill, and Buffalo Lake Insurance (all in Buffalo Lake), the News*Mirror office in Hector, and any church member. Tickets at the door will be $9.00 for adults, $4.00 for children ages 5 – 11, and free for preschoolers.

    1. January 8 Memory Loss Caregiver Support Group
      6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

      The next meeting of a local area support group for adult children, spouses, and friends caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or a related memory loss will be on Tuesday, January 8th, beginning at 6:00 PM at First Lutheran Church (925 13th Street East) in Glencoe. The group meets the second Tuesday of every month, is open to the public and is free of charge.       St. Joseph Catholic Church (41 East First Street) in Waconia invites you to its Winter Blast on Saturday and Sunday, January 12th and 13th. Saturday’s activities include the Knights of Columbus Fish Fry Basket/Beer Dinner from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the church’s Parish Center. Following the dinner there’s a free public dance with bar featuring “The Losers” from 7:30 – 11:30 PM in the St. Joseph School gymnasium. Sunday’s activities from 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM in the Parish Center include a brunch, cash raffle, children’s carnival with games, prizes, face painting and more.     3. January 12 Benefit for Don Artmann
      4:00 pm – 11:45 pm

      A benefit dinner and dance is planned for Don Artmann (owner of Big Don’s Carthedral of Lester Prairie) on Saturday, January 12th, at Neaton’s Shed (3480 County Road 21), located across from the Hollywood Sports Complex, rural Watertown. Don was diagnosed with leukemia in July of 2011. All proceeds from the event will help with Don and his family with medical and housing expenses. The benefit will start at 4:00 PM and continue until midnight, including a great meal, silent auction and a dance with live music by Diamondback.

    1. January 16 Route 55 Jazz Band Free Concert
      8:00 pm – 9:00 pm

      The Route 55 Jazz Band, along with guest jazz trumpet soloist Bob Baca, will perform a free concert on Wednesday, January 16th, at the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School (8700 County Road 6 SW) beginning at 8:00 PM. Bob Baca is a trumpet virtuoso who has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and the Milwaukee Symphony, and has toured with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme and Buddy Rich. He’s also a past member of the ensemble for Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” Again, the concert is free.

    1. January 19 Benefit for Barb Reierson (Goethke)

      A benefit bake sale, vendor fair, silent auction and dinner is planned for Barb Reierson (Goethke) on Saturday, January 19th, from 3:00 – 7:00 PM at the Community Center (204 Shamrock Drive) in Arlington.  Barb was diagnosed with AML Leukemia in August of 2012.  All proceeds from the event will help with Barb and her family with medical and housing expenses.  For more information, visitwww.BenefitforBarb.webs.com.

    2. January 19 Lake Mary VFW & Auxiliary Chili Feed
      4:15 pm – 7:00 pm

      The Lake Mary VFW Post 9232 and Auxiliary invite you to their 4th Annual Chili Feed on Saturday, January 19th, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM (or until the chili is gone) at the Winsted American Legion (161 1st Street N) in Winsted.  Enjoy a meal of chili, homemade corn bread, garlic bread, veggies, dip and homemade desserts.  There’s a new kid’s menu too, featuring a hotdog, dessert and a beverage.  Take out orders will be available.  Advance tickets can be purchased from Rhonda Decker, Mary Quast or Amy Gatz at Flagship Bank in Winsted for $8.00.  At the door ticket prices will be $9.00 for adults and $4.00 for children 10 years of age and younger

    1. January 20 Bouja & Chicken Noodle Soup Sale
      8:30 am – 9:30 am

      The monthly Bouja & Chicken Noodle Soup Sale at St. Anthony’s Church (170 Meeker Avenue South) in Watkins is on Sunday, January 20th, with sale hours from 8:30 AM – noon. Bouja is priced at $11.00 gallon and chicken noodle soup is $10.00 per gallon.

    2. January 20 Hamburg Lions Pancake Brunch
      8:30 am – 12:30 pm

      The Hamburg Lions will serve a Pancake Brunch on Sunday, January 20th, from 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM at the Hamburg Community Hall (351 Henrietta Avenue). The brunch will include pancakes, eggs, sausage, applesauce and beverages. The cost is $7.00 for adults, $3.00 for children ages 5 – 10, and free for kids under the age of 5. Proceeds from the brunch will be used to purchase new flags and poles for the city of Hamburg.
